Raising Awareness and Support to Save Wildlife and Habitats in the Mississippi River Delta
Audubon has been a stakeholder in Louisiana for more than 75 years. Our Paul J. Rainey Wilidlife Sanctuary was created in 1924 as a 26,000-acre Gulf-coastal brackish and intermediate marsh wildlife habitat reserve. Covering 40 square miles, it is the oldest and one of the most ecologically significant of all Audubon nature preserves and likely the oldest preserve still owned by a modern conservation organization in the country. More recently, we added science staff, led by Dr. Paul Kemp, and established a bold conservation partnership to stem the alarming deterioration of the Louisiana coastal wetlands and the birds, other wildlife, people and communities they support.
